Aristocrat Sparkling Punch
1 cup cube sugar 1 quart sparkling water 1 bottle light, dry red wine 4 oz brandy 2 bottles Champagne ice block fruits, for garnish
Dissolve 1 cup of cube sugar in 1 cup of sparkling water, pour into a punch bowl. Add 1 bottle of red wine and 4 ounces of brandy, stirring well. Place a block of ice in the bowl, and pour in 2 bottles of Champagne and the rest of the sparkling water. Garnish the top of the ice block with strawberries and raspberries, or other fruits in season, and float thin slices of 2 oranges on top.
Notes: Feel free to use any inexpensive red and sparkling wines you have on hand; these punches won’t make proper use of your best bottles. Savvy hosts in the 40s also relied on a few secret ingredients to add some zing: double-brewed black or weak green tea, and vanilla. Feel free to experiment with your favorites when you serve this punch–cheers!
